At least two people have died and about 26 wounded after dozens of vehicles piled up on a highway section in east China’s Jiangsu Province on Saturday afternoon.
The accident happened at the Changzhou section of the highway linking east China’s Shanghai Municipality and Nanjing city. It is reported that two passenger buses and about 50 cars have been involved in the crash, making it difficult for the ambulance to reach the site.
The 26 injured have however been sent to nearby hospitals.
Images and videos posted on Chinese social media show dozens of trucks, buses and cars crashed into each other, some of them severely damaged.
While the reason for the pile-up is yet to be determined, there are reports that weather might have contributed to the crash. The accident site was slippery due to the rain.
Highways across China are congested this weekend as people travel for the Qingming Festival. Saturday was the first day of a three-day national holiday marking China’s traditional Tomb-Sweeping Day.
