Typhoon Etau leads to floods in Japan, thousands evacuated

Typhoon Etau smashed into Japan on Wednesday, then moved out into the Sea of Japan, but heavy rain has continued to drench the country. Tens of thousands of people have been ordered to flee their homes. The torrential downpours have also exacerbated a contaminated water problem at the Fukushima nuclear plant as it overwhelmed the site’s drainage pumps. A spokesman for the plant’s operator, Tokyo Electric Power, said that hundreds of tons of contaminated water have poured into the ocean.
