U.S. schools expected to hire more Mandarin teachers in 5 yrs

At the joint news conference with Chinese President Xi Jinping at the White House last Friday, Obama said the U.S. will start a new initiative called “1 Million Strong”, to encourage 1 million American students to learn Mandarin Chinese over the next five years.

According to Carola McGiffert, president of a nonpartisan, nonprofit foundation which will lead the new initiative, substantially increasing the number of Mandarin language teachers in American schools is very important for the “1 Million Strong” initiative.
