Oleh Barna, a member of Solidarity political party, handed Prime Minister Arseny Yatsenyuk a bouquet of roses and then unexpectedly dragged him away from the rostrum.
A scuffle broke out in the Ukrainian parliament as Yatsenyuk’s supporters rallied to defend him, which met a resistance from Barna’s allies.
The tension surfaced after Barna earlier accused the Ukrainian government of ineffectiveness and started to collect signatures in the parliament for a resolution to oust the Prime Minister.
In recent months, Yatsenyuk has faced a harsh criticism from some lawmakers and civil society activists over an alleged lack of reforms in the country, little progress in the fight against corruption and involvement of the cabinet itself into corruption schemes.
Earlier in the day, about 1,000 people blocked the street outside the parliament building to demand the ouster of Yatsenyuk and his cabinet.
