Up to 30 Taliban militants have been killed and over a dozen injured amid clashes with government forces in the extremists’ former stronghold of Afghanistan’s Helmand province. Provincial authorities say there were no casualties of security personnel. Taliban militants claimed in an online statement, however, that they had destroyed an armored vehicle and a security checkpoint, besides inflicting casualties on security personnel. Both the Taliban and government forces stepped up efforts to gain more ground ahead of snowfall in the mountainous country.
