US ends technical oversight of Internet address system

The symbolic role of the US as the holder of the Internet’s address book is coming to an end. The US Department of Commerce has said its contract with the non-profit Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) has expired. The US will now hand over control of ICANN to the global community of Internet engineers, academics, businesses, non-government and government groups.
