US judge grants $20 billion settlement over 2010 BP oil spill

A federal judge in the US city of New Orleans on Monday approved a 20 billion US dollar settlement of the BP oil spill case in the Gulf of Mexico. The US Justice Department has estimated that the settlement will cost BP 20.8 billion US dollars in the biggest environmental settlement in US history. The judge had set the stage for the settlement with an earlier ruling that BP had been “grossly negligent”, after the offshore rig explosion that killed 11 workers and caused a spill of 134 million gallons of oil.
