US Justice Department: Baltimore police routinely violate rights

A report released by the US Department of Justice has sharply criticized the Baltimore Police Department following the death of detainee Freddie Gray last year. The report claims that the police engaged in a pattern of conduct that violated both the constitution and federal law. It comes 16 months after the high profile of death of an African-American in police custody. Police arrested Gray, a 25-year-old black man, for fleeing unprovoked in a high-crime area. He suffered a severe spinal cord injury while handcuffed in police transport, and died a week later, which triggered rioting and protests in Baltimore.
