The US Navy is leading a 30-nation maritime exercise across the Arabian Gulf. The drills aim at helping to protect international trade routes against possible threats, including those posed by the Islamic State and al-Qaeda. They are taking place ahead of a visit by US President Barack Obama on April 21 to Riyadh, where he will attend a summit with the Gulf Cooperation Council states.
