US sets up anti-missile shield site in Poland

The US has activated on Thursday a land-based missile defense station in Poland, which will be part of NATO’s larger and controversial missile shield. The base will provide the NATO with a permanent, round-the-clock missile shield that will work alongside radar stations and ships across Europe.
The full shield, stretching from Greenland to the Azores – an autonomous region of Portugal, will be handed over to NATO in July. Command and control will be run from a US air base in Germany. However, Moscow says the US-led alliance is trying to encircle it close to the strategically important Black Sea, home to a Russian naval fleet.
