An American student — detained in Pyongyang since January — has been presented to the media by DPRK authorities. It is the first time that Otto Warmbier has been seen by foreign media since the DPRK announced his arrest on January 22nd. The authorities claim the University of Virginia undergraduate was “perpetrating a hostile act against the DPRK at the tacit connivance of the US government and under its manipulation”.
2) South China Sea tensions: China urges US to stand down on regional issues
China’s Foreign Ministry has urged the US to stand down on issues in the South China Sea. The Ministry’s remarks came after a senior US official made some comments on the region.
3) China, Gulf Arab States resume free trade talks
China and the Gulf Cooperation Council are holding a 6th round of negotiations in the Saudi capital Riyadh. They are working on a free trade deal which has been under negotiation for more than a decade. During the four-day talks, views on trade, investment, economic and technology cooperation will be on the agenda.
