US to deploy 16 F-35 stealth fighters at west Japan base in 2017

The United States plans to deploy 16 stealth F-35 fighters to a US military base in western Japan next year, the Kyodo News agency reports. The Japanese government has informed the city of Iwakuni in Yamaguchi Prefecture, where the air base is located. It would be the first time that the US has stationed stealth aircraft overseas, according to Kyodos. The plan is to first deploy 10 F-35 jets in January and six more in August.
