Uyghur students receive scholarships from charity group in Tianjin

More than 100 students from northwest China’s Xinjiang region received scholarships and gifts at a charity event in Tianjin in mid January.

The students, mostly of the Uyghur ethnicity, are studying at high schools in the northern port city.

“I feel that these donations are a great encouragement for us to realize our dreams, so that we can contribute our share to the nation when we grow up.”

For years, the Chinese government has been selecting top minority students from Xinjiang and placed them in high schools in bigger cities that offer better education and career opportunities.

This time, the donations are provided by a charity organization in Tianjin.

“These children come a long way from home to study here. We need to care for them. I’ m a mother myself, and I feel it’ s my responsibility to help them.”

Since 2007, the Sunshine Charity Group has offered scholarships and gifts to more than 1,700 students from Xinjiang.
