There’s plenty of attention on Venezuela right now, even though the country is going through parliamentary elections. For much of the last 16 years, Venezuelan politics has been dominated by ‘Chavismo’, a populist, leftist movement, named after its charismatic founder, the late Hugo Chavez. But Venezuela is in the midst of its deepest economic crisis in living memory, and enthusiasm for government promises of better times ahead is waning. Multiple opinion polls have suggested that Venezuela’s political opposition is now more popular than the government.
