Venezuela’s top government officials and opposition leaders have commenced talks in the Dominican Republic. The three-day meeting lays the groundwork for political dialogue between the two sides locked in a political stand-off amidst a severe economic crisis. Opposition parties won legislative elections last year with promises to reverse the socialist policies put in place by President Nicolas Maduro. They argue his poor handling of the economy, along with low oil prices, have pushed the OPEC nation into a severe recession.
