Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his Colombian counterpart, Juan Manuel Santos, have agreed to a gradual reopening of their border. The news signals a warming of ties between the two countries, after Venezuela formally closed the border a year ago as part of a crackdown on smugglers and paramilitary groups. The border has long been a hotspot for smuggling daily necessities like toothpaste and pasta to illegal drugs and weapons.
