Vice Chacellor Appa Rao Goes on Indefinite Leave

University of Hyderabad (UoH) vice-chancellor Appa Rao Podile on Sunday (January 24) went on an indefinite leave. The development comes at a time when the seven students of UoH resumed their hunger strike demanding that Appa Rao – named in the police complaint into Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula’s suicide – should be removed from his post. TIMES NOW spoke to Apparao over the phone where he constantly denied being on leave or being asked to leave his post. “We are looking for a solution for academic normalcy to happen in the university. Nobody has asked me to step down as a VC, I have responsibilities, said Apparao. On asking for how long he is on leave he continued to say that they are looking for solutions for the University. “It will take time for us to arrive at normalcy, in fact solution will bring normalcy. Classes will begin soon as students are losing on time. And then we have to address the concerns that are raised by the group that are on the campus,” added the VC. Appa Rao has been in the midst of a raging storm after Rohith Vemula hung himself last Sunday after he and four others were suspended and banned from the hostel for allegedly beating a member of a rival student union last year. Varsity students have been demanding the VC’s resignation since and have received support from various other students unions as well. The on-campus agitation against him had steadily increased in intensity and Sunday’s decision to go on an indefinite strike may be a direct consequence of the protests.
