Renowned Chinese playwright, author, and translator Yang Jiang passed away in Beijing on Wednesday morning, at the age of 105. A video shot in 2001 shows Yang Jiang announcing the establishment of a scholarship program for impoverished students attending Tsinghua University. The program has been funded with royalties from books written by her and her late husband, Qian Zhongshu, also a renowned writer. Over the past 15 years, some 20 million yuan, or 3 million US dollars have been distributed to help hundreds of students. It’s Yang Jiang’s hope that the students who have benefited from the program will live by the Tsinghua University motto of“self-discipline and commitment”.
