Visitors capped at first glass bridge

Huge visitor inflow during China’s National Day holiday has put pressure on many scenic spots across the country.

Suspended 180 meters over a canyon in Shiniuzhai Scenic Zone in central Hunan Province, China’s first all-glass bridge has capped visitor numbers.

Pingjiang County has set the maximum number of daily visitors to Shiniuzhai Scenic Zone at 10,000 until Thursday.

It received 20,000 visitors on Friday, the second day of the week-long vocation.

After two years’ construction, the 300-meter-long and two-meter-wide walkway was opened to the public last month.

Zone executives say the decision was made because of the overall capacity of the park, not safety fears about the bridge.

The bridge is made of two layers of hardened glass, 24 millimeters thick in total.

Hunan is slated to open a longer and higher glass bridge later this year over Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon.
