Volatility in Mali: Why was Gao targeted?

On the same day of the bombing in the UN camp, a UN-linked de-mining group had also come under attack in Gao. UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon describes it as the most dangerous workplace for the UN. With complicated ties between ethnic groups and social division, there has been much volatility in recent years. It’s particularly unstable just north of Gao because of rampant clashes among militant groups. The city sits on the southern edge of the Sahara desert, and is on a vital communication line, making it strategically important.
