Votes for Sale in Karnataka Rajya Sabha Poll

Within days of the Election Commission countermanding polls for two Tamil Nadu assembly constituencies because of brazen attempts to bribe voters, elections to the Upper House touched a new low when Karnataka’s four Rajya Sabha seats got mired in charges of corruption. In a sting operation aired by TIMES NOW on Thursday (June 2), MLAs spoke about the tussle between the Congress’s third candidate, retired IPS officer K C Ramamurthy, and the JD (S)’s sole candidate, a businessman from Mangaluru, B M Farook, for 12 Independent MLAs’ votes, vital for their victory. Each candidate needs 45 votes for a victory. The Congress is short of 12 and the JD(S) is shy of 10 votes. In their interviews to TIMES NOW, Independent MLA Varthur Prakash, a confidante of chief minister Siddaramaiah, admitted that he was given the responsibility of securing votes of 12 Independents and five JD(S) MLAs. The JD(S)’s strength of 40 MLAs in the House went down by five last week with B Z A Zameer Ahmed Khan publicly declaring his support to Ramamurthy. A candidate told the TV channel that money was in play, saying on condition of anonymity, “Without any expenditure no one can win elections today. Rs 25 crore was spent the last time around.”
