Voting begins in Zambia elections despite fears of violence

Voting is underway in Zambia’s elections. Polling stations opened at 6am local time and will close at 6pm. Millions of voters are expected to cast their ballots in the presidential election that pits Edgar Lungu against arch rival Hakainde Hichilema. Zambians are also voting for Members of Parliament, councilors, and in a referendum on a bill of rights. Despite fears that violence in the build-up to the elections could scare away voters, events so far have been peaceful.
