Indian-American Sikh actor and designer Waris Ahluwalia on Tuesday claimed that he was banned from boarding a flight because of his turban. He posted a photograph with his flight ticket on Instagram, saying he was not allowed to board Aero Mexico flight to New York for refusing to remove his turban. His Instagram post said: “This morning in Mexico City I was told I could not board my @aeromexico flight to NYC because of my turban.#FearisanOpportunitytoEducate#humanrights #dignity #lovenotfear”. A New York daily quoted Ahluwalia as saying, “That (remove his turban) is not something I would do in public. That’s akin to asking someone to take ff their clothes.” Another daily said Ahluwalia was expecting the enhanced security measures thanks to the supposedly random Secondary Security Screening Selection stamp on his ticket, which flags passengers for additional inspection such as more enhanced pat-downs. The actor has played roles in “The Grand Budapest Hotel” and “The Darjeeling Limited”.
