West Bengal : Violence During Civic Polls

Civic polls in Asansol and Bidhannagar in West Bengal turned violent on Saturday (October 3) as goons allegedly heckled and intimidated voters. According to sources, goons roamed with swords and sticks and threatened the voters. Police resorted to lathi-charge to tackle the miscreants. However, several reporters, including BJP leaders, reportedly got injured during the clashes. “We have received reports of booth capturing and violence mainly from Bidhannagar and Asansol. We are taking stock of the situation and have taken necessary measures,” State Election Commissioner S R Upadhaya told PTI. The polls are a precursor to next year’s assembly elections in Bengal with ruling Trinamool Congress and its arch rival Left Front once again pitted against each other. The results will be announced on October 16.
