The Taliban confirmed the death of its longtime leader Mullah Mohammad Omar on Thursday. They also named Omar’s deputy Mullah Mohammad Akhtar Mansoor/Mansour as Taliban’s new leader on the same day.
Like Omar, Mullah Mansour comes from Kandahar. But other personal information details remain unknown outside the group.
Many Taliban observers believe Omar’s death could lead to a split in the group. They may be divided on making peace with Kabul and continuing the 14-year insurgency.
