Why Chinese still live in underground courtyards?

People in Shanxian, central China’s Henan Province, built courtyards this way to save on brick, timber and money.
The underground quadrangles have a history of more than 4,000 years. The oldest house here has been home to seven generations.
The construction skills of the courtyards were listed in the national intangible cultural heritage list in 2011.
