In 2018, China’s telecommunication giants Huawei and ZTE came under intense scrutiny over fears that their equipment could be used for spying. Several governments around the world have blocked telecoms companies from using Huawei gear in next-generation 5G mobile networks, citing security concerns.
China trade guru Dr Zhang Jianping, director of the research centre under the Commerce Ministry, says that this is an “overreaction from the Western world”.
He points out to Conversation With’s Lin Xueling that while Huawei has a good relationship with the local government, its performance in the market is appreciated in more than 150 countries due to new technologies and innovation.
He also explains what it would take to break the monopoly phenomenon in the future with regards to foreign companies in the Chinese market, as China opens up at its own pace.
