Why UN chief awards this Israel-Palestine orchestra special title?

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appoints the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra as a UN Global Advocate for Cultural Understanding.

Co-founded by Barenboim and the late Palestinian scholar Edward Said in 1999, the orchestra unites young musicians from Israel, Palestine and several Arab countries.

BAN says quote: “For the past 9 years Maestro Barenboim has used his extraordinary talent and commitment to promote peace and tolerance.”
