Wild elephant injures 4 in SW China

A wild Asian elephant injured four villagers in southwest China’s Yunnan Province.

Local authorities said the accident happened on June 14, when a wild elephant entered a village house in Menghai County, Xishuangbanna Dai Autonomous Prefecture

Four people were wounded.

Among them one is in serious condition.

“My wife threw an apple to the elephant when she saw it. And then it ran into my house. You can still see the signs and traces it left here.”

Wild Asian elephants are under state protection in China.

About 300 of them live mainly in Yunnan Province.

Enhanced protection for wild animals has seen the mammals’ number rise in recent years, but cases of clashes with humans have also increased.

Wild Asian elephants killed two villagers in Xishuangbanna last month and killed a third in Pu’er City of Yunnan on June 6.
