A wildfire broke out in a mountainous area in southwest China’s Chongqing Municipality at midday on Monday. Witnesses said the fire started near the foot of a mountain, then was blown to the top by a strong wind.
Firefighters, local forest fire management department staff, and villagers soon went up the mountain to put out the fire. However, the fire proved too fierce, so rescuers decided to cut down trees to set a fire barrier.
The fire was extinguished on Monday evening. Rescuers continued to clear the remains to prevent the fire from re-igniting.
An investigation into the cause and damage of the fire is currently underway.
