Speaking over the resolution passed by the Sahitya Akademi, writer Shashi Deshpande said she wishes the Sahitya Akademi had come out earlier on the same without any pressure from the writers. Deshpande has submitted her resignation from the organization’s General Council, out of “a sense of strong disappointment” with the Akademi’s failure to protest the murder of MM Kalburgi. “I wish they had been spontaneous. One still wonders why they didn’t say it earlier. Until I get an answer to this question I am not happy,” said Deshpande. “What kept them from speaking out on these things, and saying it is with the writers in this matter on freedom of speech and expression. Why did they not do it earlier?,” asked the novelist. She further asked that if next time same situation arises will the same forces prevent them from saying and will they come into play again. The Sahitya Akademi today strongly condemned the killing of Kannada writer M M Kalburgi and others while urging litterateurs to take back awards they have returned even as protests and counter protests were held outside its headquarters.
