China booked their place in the quarter-finals of the Women’s World Cup with a 1-0 win over Cameroon at the Commonwealth Stadium on Saturday. China’s best record at the World Cup was in 1999 when they finished runners-up, beaten by the USA in the final. They have not lived up to people’s expectations since reaching those heights in 1999, and were unable to even qualify in 2011. A classy 12th-minute goal from forward Wang Shanshan proved enough for the former runners-up to reach the last eight of the competition where they will face the winners of Monday’s game between the United States and Colombia.
