World’s largest radio telescope nears completion in China

China has nearly completed construction of the world’s largest radio telescope, the “FAST” Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope. Technicians have been hoisting the final reflector panel onto the giant frame in southwest China’s Guizhou Province this morning. The single-aperture spherical telescope has 4,450 triangular reflector panels, and covers the size of about 30 football pitches. Once completed, the telescope will have the world’s highest detection sensitivity, and will be used for observing dark energy and dark matter in the universe.
