Chinese President Xi Jinping held on Monday a welcoming ceremony for his visiting Togolese counterpart, Faure Essozimna Gnassingbe, at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing. Ahead of the president’s visit, the West African country made a statement, calling on countries directly concerned in the South China Sea issue to obey Article 298 of the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), and to resolve disputes through negotiation and consultation. Togo also expressed hopes of becoming a major trade hub along China’s Belt and Road initiative.
