Xinjiang gears up to be new energy powerhouse

The Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region is the largest among China’s provinces and regions, more than twice the size of the US state of Texas. Although mostly desert, it’s rich in energy resources. Now the region is starting to make use of those resources. By 2020, Xinjiang will complete the construction of power transmission lines that will link with eastern China, along with Sichuan and Qinghai provinces, and the Chongqing municipality. The total outward power transmission capacity is expected to reach 300 billion kilowatt hours annually.
