Year in Space: Scott Kelly and Mikhail Kornienko safely return to Earth

Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko (last to leave the aircraft)and U.S. astronaut Scott Kelly(second to leave the aircraft)landed safely back on Earth in Kazakhstan early Wednesday, after spending 340 days aboard the International Space Station (ISS).

Also back to Earth was Russian cosmonaut Sergei Volkov(first to leave the aircraft), who spent six months at ISS.

Kornienko and Kelly conducted a variety of tests and participated in many studies to provide new insight into how the human body adjusts to isolation, weightlessness, radiation and the stress of long-duration spaceflight.

The 11-month experience will be useful for NASA in their preparations for the eventual “Journey to Mars”, under which it is trying to find possibility to send humans to the red planet in the 2030s.
