Yemen’s parliament was convened on Saturday for the first time since civil war broke out last year in an attempt by the rebels to give legitimacy to a new ruling council. The parliament approved a political body backed by the rebel Houthi group and ex-president Ali Abdullah Saleh as the new ruler of the country. Lawmakers said Saturday’s vote has constitutionally denied the Saudi-backed government-in-exile, and replaced it with the Supreme Political Committee.
