In Shanghai’s Yuyuan Garden, the traditional lantern show will be staged until February 25. It features a three-story-tall version of Monkey King Sun Wukong from the classic novel “Journey to the West”, along with 49 sets of lanterns based on characters from Chinese folk tales. More than one-third of the lanterns are lit up with LED lights in an effort to make the show more environmentally friendly. The show was cancelled last year after the deadly stampede at the Shanghai Bund. This year, the organizers have taken more precautions to ensure public safety.
