Zika can’t stop the Rio Carnival

The Rio de Janeiro Carnival, one of the greatest shows on earth, opened as scheduled on Friday in the shadow of the Zika virus. The highly anticipated parade at the Sambadrome also made its first appearance, with the Brazilian people again demonstrating their ability to put optimism and a party mood above all other problems.

On the first day, seven samba schools paraded for about 70,000 people in the grandstand. However, this was not the full pomp and regalia that will be seen on the main parades of Sunday and Monday, when all samba schools will compete for to be crowned as champions.
